medF

At the Dies Academicus of the University of Basel, Heidelberg molecular biologist Prof. Dr. Stephan Urban was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine. His pioneering discoveries in the field of molecular virology of hepatitis B and hepatitis D viruses contributed to the development of the first drug against chronic hepatitis D.

The Faculty of Medicine also played a role in two other contexts: the University Sports Prize, donated by Baloise, was awarded to Madlaina Matter, a Master's student in human medicine at the University of Basel. Matter has played volleyball for Sm'Aesch Pfeffingen in the National League A for many years; she is also a member of the elite national team, which qualified for the round of 16 at the 2023 European Championships for the first time in its history.

Furthermore, the Faculty of Medicine prize for the best PhD thesis, donated by the Margot and Erich Goldschmidt & Peter René Jacobson Foundation, was awarded to Dr. Dr. Alexandros Polymeris. The Faculty of Medicine prize for the best dissertation leading to a medical doctorate, donated by the University Hospitals, was also awarded to Dr. Dr. Joan Elias Walter.
