Andreas J. Keller new Professor of Physiology

medF

Prof. Dr. Andreas J. Keller is to become the new Professor of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine. He will take up his position at the Department of Biomedicine on August 1, 2024.

Keller researches how the human brain constantly creates and shapes a model of the world. By using several methods, he studies how new incoming information is brought into a meaningful relationship with passing experiences without disrupting cognitive processes running simultaneously. This "controlled plasticity" can be observed in the sensory cortex, for example, which constantly processes sensory data and contextualizes it with passed admissions. The aim is to better understand the mechanisms of cortical circuit formation through controlled plasticity - and thus learning itself.

After completing his PhD at the Institute of Neuroinformatics at ETH Zurich in 2015, Keller worked at the Brain Research Institute at the University of Zurich, moved to the Friedrich Miescher Institute in 2016 and then to the University of California, San Francisco. Since 2021, he has been head of a research group at the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel and Assistant Professor at the University of Basel.
