David Berger new Clinical Professor of Intensive Care Medicine

medF

The University Council has elected David Berger as Professor of Intensive Care Medicine. He will take up his position at the University Hospital Basel (USB) on June 1, 2024. The appointment to the professorship is linked to his appointment as Head of Intensive Care Medicine at the USB.

Berger studied human medicine at the University of Basel, where he received his doctorate in 2005. During his training as an intensive care physician in Basel, he moved to the University Clinic for Intensive Care Medicine at Inselspital Bern as part of a research fellowship. He qualified as a specialist in intensive care medicine in 2012 and habilitated at the University of Bern in 2019.

His research focuses on the clinical pathophysiology of the circulation and lungs, in particular the volume status of the cardiovascular system and interactions with extracorporeal circulation. Closely related to this is his interest in identifying prognostically and therapeutically relevant parameters from the wealth of data generated by patient monitoring and integrating them into clinical practice. Berger has a broad clinical background and advocates interdisciplinary intensive care medicine.
