Intensive exercise - longer life
Fabian Schwendinger and colleagues from the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health at the Faculty of Medicine have investigated how the type of physical activity is related to life expectancy. Their study shows that those who engage in physical activity at a higher intensity live longer.
This finding is interesting because the focus in research and in the public eye has so far been on the duration of sport and exercise. The study therefore breaks with the idea that longer sports units are always the best solution for staying fit. The research findings could help to consciously add higher-intensity units to exercise and training plans.
However, endurance sports are by no means off the table. According to Fabian Schwendinger from the DSBG's Rehabilitative and Regenerative Sports Medicine subject area, the study shows that, in addition to the duration, the intensity of the practical courses also effectively improves vascular function and cardiorespiratory fitness, i.e. the performance of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
