Two SNSF Advanced Grants for researchers at the Faculty of Medicine
Cancer researcher Prof. Dr. Mohamed Bentires-Alj and diabetes researcher Prof. Dr. Marc Donath, both from the Department of Biomedicine, have each received one of the highly competitive Swiss National Science Foundation awards.
Bentires-Alj and his team are trying to improve the chances of recovery for patients with breast cancer. To this end, they are focusing on "dormant" tumor cells that can reactivate and spread after many years. With the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the researchers will gain a better understanding of what causes this dormant state and how dormant cells can be eliminated or prevented from spreading again.
Marc Donath and his team are observing the complex interplay between the immune system, nervous system and metabolism in order to improve therapies for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The focus is on a more differentiated understanding of the role of blood sugar and the development of better methods for lowering blood sugar levels.
