Viola Heinzelmann-Schwarz New Vice Dean for Research

On June 26, the Faculty Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine elected Prof. Viola Heinzelmann-Schwarz, MD, as Vice Dean for Research. She succeeded Prof. Marc Donath as of the first of August. Heinzelmann has been Professor of Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine since 2012 and Chief Physician of the Department of Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology at the University Hospital Basel since 2013.
After study visits in Tübingen, London, Dunedin/New Zealand and Zurich, Viola Heinzelmann-Schwarz completed her training as a gynecologist at the University Hospital Zurich. In 2007, she received her Venia Legendi (Privatdozentin) at the University of Zurich. From 2008 to 2012, she worked at one of Australia's largest gynecologic cancer centers in Sydney, where she received her subspecialization in Gynecologic Oncology.
Heinzelmann's clinical and research focus is on gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. In addition to translational research (DBM; Ovarian Cancer Research), Heinzelmann has also established a clinical oncology research group (DKF) and a clinical trials group (Swiss-GO), with which she is conducting the first Swiss gynecologic oncology study of ovarian cancer in Europe. For this, she won the 2022 Annemarie Karrasch Research Prize. Heinzelmann heads the Swiss Working Group on Gyn. Oncology (Swiss-AGO), the Tumor Profiler Center (in the Leadership Team) and is a Council Member of the European Society of Gynecological Oncology Council.
