Birthday: The Faculty of Medicine turns 564!

medF

On April 4, 1460, the Faculty of Medicine was founded as part of the University of Basel. In the same year, the Inca military leader Cápac Yupanqui subdued the Huanca people in Junín (Peru), Portuguese sailors discovered the Cape Verdean island of Maio and the Chinese military general Cao Qin (Ming dynasty) staged a coup d'état against the Tianshun Emperor. The Swiss Confederates conquered Thurgau and placed it under the administration of the so-called Common Dominion. Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli joined Verrocchio's workshop as apprentices.

Curiously, a second university was founded on April 4, 1460, namely that of Nantes. Unlike the University of Basel, however, it did not exist continuously, but had to be newly founded in 1961. Only 27 continuously operating universities worldwide are older than the University of Basel. Since not all of them also had a medical faculty, the University of Basel belongs to an even more illustrious circle.

Despite its advanced age, the Faculty of Medicine continues to unleash new potential: it is a highly active member of the Life Science Hub Basel, practices world-class research, educates the future of human medicine, dentistry, sports science, nursing science and medical technology in five degree programs and, together with its numerous partner institutions, transcends borders to provide optimal healthcare.
