Welcome Prof. Liechti and Prof. Apostolova!
The Faculty of Medicine welcomes Matthias Liechti as a new Clinical Professor and Petya Apostolova as a new Assistant Professor with tenure track.
The University Council has elected Prof. Dr. Matthias E. Liechti as Clinical Professor for Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical Faculty. The appointment is allocated at the University Hospital Basel with effect from July 1, 2023. Liechti has been Chief Physician since 2010 and Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology at the University Hospital Basel since 2020. His election to the professorship implies his appointment as chief physician.
The focus of his research is on clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and therapeutic use of psychoactive substances including psychedelics.
Prof. Dr. Petya Apostolova is new tenure-track Assistant Professor of Experimental Hematology at the Faculty of Medicine. She will take up her professorship on November 1, 2023. With her appointment as Assistant Professor, Apostolova will also become Chief Physician at the Department of Hematology at the University Hospital Basel.
Apostolova's scientific work focuses on the question of how hematological cancers can be cured using immunotherapies. A particular focus is on the study of metabolic processes in tumor and immune cells, which are central to their survival, cell function and also interactions with each other. Apostolova thus aims to develop innovative concepts for immunological tumor therapies.
