The Medical Faculty of the University of Basel was founded in 146032 years before Christopher Columbus first landed in the Bahamas. In the Shanghai Ranking of 2023, it ranks among the top 75 worldwide in the category "Medical Sciences". In five degree programs about 120 professors and assistant professors educate about 2800 students, supported by about 500 postdoctoral fellows, medical staff and postdocs. Five departments conduct research on issues relevant to medicine and health sciences in the areas of basic biomedical sciences and clinical applications, movement, health and nursing sciences, and biomedical engineering.
